Are FMD vaccines effective?

FMD vaccines appear to be strain specific. The type 'O' vaccines commercially available are reported to be protective in upwards of 90% of animals and to provide protection within 4 days.

We are at present gathering information about the different vaccines, their cost, availability and efficacy. If you have any information on this subject please email us.

Dr Keith Sumption is working on a paper on vaccination at present which we hope answer a number of the questions.

Several papers from Pirbright on the trials of the emergency vaccine in sheep give information on expected efficacy. We will link to these asap.

Formulating the vaccine into doses, and price would depend on arrangements with commercial companies involved, since the emergency vaccine is a non-standard product but no doubt an arrangement could be made for preparation of the emergency vaccine between the 3 commercial suppliers and Pirbright/DEFRA. If the cost was higher than the international cost of  vaccine it would not be a surprise, although a sensitive area that the papers would enjoy.
